Gates of Hell
By Laura Hutcheson
Verse
All my hopes have vanished my nemesis is on my trail
Together we will fade away, no riding into tomorrow
We didn’t win we didn’t lose it didn’t come out right?
It is a darkening sky. A darkening sky A darkening sky
Chorus
Unlock the keys to the Gates of Hell
The Gates of Hell, the Gates of Hell
Verse
We are hidden in the woods
My body’s wrecked and all shot through
Already you are dead on the ground
And I am dying to greet you
We didn’t win we didn’t lose it didn’t come out right?
It is a darkening sky. A darkening sky A darkening sky
Chorus

Reading James Michener’s Texas taught me that the Texas Rangers were both devils and saints. Tragically extinguishing native Americans and yet, rescuing forlorn pilgrims in the wilderness.
There was one Texas Ranger with a kind heart that survived almost everything. I wrote this song through his eyes as he and his wife were killed while hiding in the woods. It’s a bit of a “come to Jesus” moment as he moves into the afterlife with the keys to the Gates of Hell.
